Name a pizza topping

Everyone's answer, grouped. The biggest one is the crowd, and it scores.

Games like Herd Mentality have one brilliant rule: you win by being predictable. Someone asks "what's the best biscuit?", everyone writes an answer in secret, and if you wrote what most of the room wrote, you score. Being clever gets you nothing. Being boring gets you everything.

It's a board game in a box, and it's great around a kitchen table. The trouble starts when your group doesn't fit round one. Half the team is on a video call. The party has 25 guests. Someone has to read out every answer, count them, and argue about whether "Hobnob" and "chocolate Hobnob" are the same thing.

That's the gap Telepathy fills on Neegma. It's the same think-like-the-crowd idea, played in a browser, with the counting done for you.

What makes a think-like-the-crowd game work

The best match-the-crowd games share three things.

  • No right answers, only popular ones. The question is never "what do you like?". It's "what will everyone else write?", which is a completely different puzzle.
  • Everyone answers at once, in secret. Nobody gets to copy the last person, and nobody waits for their turn.
  • A big reveal. The moment everyone sees how the room split is the whole game. It's where the groaning and the "who writes 'Jaffa Cake' for a biscuit?" happens.

Telepathy is built around exactly those three moments.

How to play Telepathy online

Telepathy is a host-led game for 3 to 20 players, or 2 to 5 teams. The host puts their screen on a TV or shares it on a call, and everyone else plays from their own phone.

  1. Share the join link or QR code. Players open it in their phone's browser and type their name. No app, no account.
  2. Put a prompt to the room. Use a set you've written in the Playground, let AI draft one around a theme, or type a prompt live on the spot. With a set, you preview each prompt first and can skip any you don't like before you share it.
  3. Everyone writes one answer in secret. Your screen shows how many answers are in, never what they say.
  4. The answers land as a word cloud. Matching answers group together and grow bigger, so the room sees the herd before a single point is given.
  5. The biggest group scores. Everyone in the most popular group takes 1000 points. If two groups tie for biggest, they split it, 500 each. A lone answer is never a crowd, so if everyone writes something different, nobody scores that round.
  6. Merge the near misses. If "Coca-Cola" and "Coca Cola" split what was obviously one answer, the host can merge them before scoring.

Then on to the next prompt, with the leaderboard between rounds.

How it compares with playing the board game

Telepathy isn't a copy of Herd Mentality, and it doesn't try to be. It takes the same core idea and builds it for groups that play on screens.

Where it worksRound one tableRound a TV, on a video call, or split across both

If your group already owns the board game and fits round one table, play it. If you're running a team call, a party of 20, or a room where nobody wants to be the one reading out answers, Telepathy is the version that scales.

30 prompts for a think-like-the-crowd game

Good prompts have one obvious answer and a few tempting alternatives. Here are 30 to start with. Copy them into a set in the Playground, or type them live.

Easy warm-ups

  1. Name a colour of the rainbow
  2. A number between 1 and 10

  6. An animal on a farm

Food and drink

  1. The best biscuit to dunk in tea
  2. A pizza topping
  3. Something you'd put on toast

  5. A reason people give for being late

Prompts 13 to 18 work well to open a team call. Nobody has to share anything personal, and the new starter has the same chance of reading the room as the founder.

Where it works best

Team icebreakers. Telepathy is one of the lowest-pressure openers there is. Nobody reveals a fact about themselves, and the first shared answer does more than a round of names and job titles. There's more on why in our Telepathy announcement.

Remote and hybrid calls. Everyone types privately, the answers group on the shared screen, and a call full of people who'd otherwise take turns speaking reacts together.

Parties. Keep the prompts light and watch guests who have never met land in the same group. For a room bigger than 20, switch to teams and let each team agree on one answer, which starts its own little debate.

No phones in the room. In a One-host session, the host runs Telepathy from a single device and players type their answer in turn before passing it back.

If you like this, try the opposite

Once your group has the hang of thinking alike, flip it. In Concentration, everyone answers the same prompt, but now the rarest answer scores the most. It's the same room and the same prompts, with the opposite instinct. We've written a whole post on unique-answer games like Pointless.

And if your group would rather guess who wrote each answer than match them, that's Who Said It.

Frequently asked questions

Can you play Herd Mentality online?

Herd Mentality itself is a board game from Big Potato. If you want the same match-the-crowd idea in a browser, Telepathy on Neegma plays it with everyone on their own phone and the host's screen on a TV or video call.

How many players do you need for a think-like-the-crowd game?

At least three, so a crowd can form. Telepathy takes 3 to 20 individual players, or 2 to 5 teams for a bigger group.

What makes a good Herd Mentality style question?

A prompt with one obvious answer and a few tempting alternatives, like "the best biscuit to dunk" or "a pizza topping". Avoid prompts where everyone will write something different.

Is it free to play?

Yes, for up to 10 players on the Free plan, with 5 sessions a month. For a bigger party, a Party Pass starts at £7.99 for 24 hours.

What's the difference between Telepathy and Concentration?

In Telepathy, you score by matching the most popular answer. In Concentration, you score by giving an answer nobody else gave.
